YOGA FOUNDATION COURSE

This course is the basis for all our yoga training and is a prerequisite for our professional qualification courses.

Aim: 

  • To provide a deeper understanding of the essence of Yoga.
  • To motivate and inspire students on a path of personal development and transformation. 
  • To introduce a range of Yoga practices and traditions, modified according to the needs of the individual student.
  • To provide a solid foundation from which students can proceed to further courses of study. 

The course can be taken on its own by students who only wish to develop a deeper understanding of yoga and enrich their personal development, or with additional training it provides the fundamental knowledge and skills required to become qualified yoga practitioners.

The course provides an introduction to the history, traditions and basic skills and practices of yoga within the framework of classical yoga philosophy. 

COURSE CONTENT:

  • a brief study of the history of Yoga and the underlying philosophy of Yoga based on the classic texts, including the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Yoga Pradipika and the Bhagavad Gita.
  • a detailed study of the practice, benefits and likely effects (physical, mental and emotional) of certain Asanas (postures) and an understanding of the necessary precautions and limitations and how to safely apply these.
  • selected classical Pranayamas (breathing practices) and their anatomical and physiological effects, will be studied and practiced.
  • consideration of selected classical Mudras (body positions which invoke particular moods and mental attitudes) and  Bandhas (psycho-physiological locks) and methods of combining the Bandhas with pranayama, mudras and other Yoga techniques.
  • an exploration of Yoga Nidra: (a deep relaxation technique); its place in therapy, in eliminating insomnia, improving the depth and quality of sleep and as a preparation for meditation.
  • the theory of Meditation and practical techniques.
  • an introduction to the Kriyas (internal cleansing practices of Hatha Yoga).
  • an introduction to Anatomy and Physiology, including the main systems of the body and how they relate to one another and are affected by, Yoga practices. 
  • an introduction to the concepts of Prana (Life Energy/ Force), Chakras (energy centres governing aspects of our personality, bodily functions and health) and Nadis (energy pathways or meridians).
  • an introduction to some of the different traditions of Yoga practice
  • an introduction to the concept and practical application of yoga to everyday living and sustainable futures
  • an introduction to diet and nutrition.
  • a general introduction to teaching practice.
NEXT COURSE:
 
The next course commences in October 2011 and is normally over nine weekends at approximately monthly intervals. the course can be completed within twelve months. We are in the process of reconfiguring this course in a somewhat different format, but please contact us to discuss this.
